Mike Roses narrative was way more confusing to read than the
others. I am not the best at reading, I did my best to understand it. It was
definitely different than the others.
1. Describe Rose’s life in Voc. Ed. What were
his teachers like? Have you ever had experience with teachers like these?
His life in Voc. Ed all seemed very interesting, so random
and different with the teachers he had to the friends he made. He of course was
placed in a lower education which is unfortunate but he also had a memorable
experience going to that school.
Mike Rose’s teachers seemed to be terrible. They would treat
you poorly and not act like teachers really at all. I would also say that they
all were pretty random as compared to one another. They would punish there students and didn’t show
to have any self control with their students. The teachers also didn’t show to
care about their education, which is ridiculous. No matter what school you go
to you should care about students education and don’t punish them in outrageous
ways.
I have never really had any teachers of this sort, that
punishes this terribly, not that I recall.
2. What did Voc. Ed do to Rose and his fellow
students? How did it affect them intellectually, emotionally, and socially? Why
was it subsequently so hard for Rose to catch up in math?
I believe it affected them in so many different ways. For
some students it might have not been the right environment for them. Students
ended up not wanting to do the work by the way they were treated and once they
found out what the teachers and that school system thought of them. That they
were “slow” and that they might not go anywhere in life. These students just
felt like they should cheat and not fully take the time to understand the
problems.
3. Why is high school
so disorienting to students like Ken Harvey? How does he cope with it? What
other strategies do students use to cope with the pressures and judgments’ they
encounter in school?
Ken Harvey shows that he stuggles a lot and would fall
behind in his education. High school was really hard and there was a lot going
on, he was a person that would get sidetracked in all the other crap that went
on in high school. They would fear all the hard things and get involved in a
lot of things that did not matter. To cope with these sorts of things you just
have to try and set all the “crap” beside and focus on whats best for you and
have good faith that you will do well. He realized that you had to fight your
fears basically. That is all to the best of my knowledge from my past and from
the reading,
4. Rose explain in
paragraph 16 that high school can be a “tremendously disorienting place”. What,
if anything, do you find disorienting about college? What steps can students
take to lessen feelings of disorientation?
College is way more laid back than high school. I find it
less hard that I was expecting but I am also going to just a community college.
The only thing I trouble with is time management. I go to school and work two
jobs so it is really hard to make time for homework. I can fall behind very
easily. Time management is one of the biggest steps a student can take to
become successful in college because college students always have something
else going on in life such as two jobs like myself. Also all students have to
study and work really hard.
5. How does your
experience of education compare (or contrast, or both) to Mike Rose’s?
My experience seems to be very different but yet similar to
his. I never had to go to a vocational school, I was never really considered “slow”
but I did have to take some extra classes throughout my schooling in elementary
and middle school that gave me additional help in reading or math. I also never
had any trouble with teachers and punishment. I always loved most of my
teachers. That would be the just of it, I could go on and on how my experience
with education my whole life differs from Mike Rose’s.
Good work--despite the difficulty you report in getting through it, your answers to the questions reveal a very good understanding of the text!
